Having known Glenn Povey since 1987, first as a idolizing fellow fan, and then a fellow publishing peer, I had somewhat lost track of him in recent years, since he relinquished his position as publisher and editor in chief of Brain Damage magazine. However, I do keep in contact with a few REG members who are also friends of Glenn's and who keep in closer contact with him. From them I had learned that he had been working on writing and publishing a book, and that he had even had contact with an unnamed bass player.
Opening the package I found the book Pink Floyd: In the Flesh, written by Glenn Povey (former editor and publisher of Brain Damage Magazine), and Ian Russel.
itting upon my doorstep the other day when I returned home from work, lay a flat hard and thick package. What could this be? I had not ordered anything. At least that I could remember. It was definitely a book.

I was very pleasantly surprised at having received his new book, and a hardback edition as well! Thanks Glenn!! A hefty tome, this 82 X 10 in. volume contains 256 pages and seemingly hundreds of photographs, many rare and never before published, mostly in color. Pink Floyd In the Flesh, is extremely professionally done and the quality is completely unsurpassed. It has the look and feel of a text book. A text book on Pink Floyd! Do you think they'll ever offer a Pink Floyd class or course at a college or university? Wouldn't that would be nice! The cover is a collage of venue bill boards, all in Pink of course. And it is published by Bloomsbury Publishing ofLondon.
I have owned Jon Rosenberg's book " A Journey Through Space and Timewith Pink Floyd" for almost 10 years. It too is a listing of Pink Floyd performances and album history. For many years it has been the Floydian bible and reference work for every Pink Floyd collector and fanatic. In fact it's been such a great source of information that at times I have found it indispensable. Glenn Povey, was also an author and research assistant for that book, as was Andy Mabbett, former publisher and editor of the now defunct Pink Floyd Fanzine, "The Amazing Pudding." Jon Rosenberg's book wasn't published professionally but nevertheless that never diminished it's value.

Glenn Povey's new book however, surpasses almost any other book in regard to both the history of Pink Floyd, their performances, and in the quality of the writing and production. Detailing each year and era of Pink Floyd this book outlines a history of the band like no book before it, giving the reader a never before seen behind the scenes look into the early beginnings of Pink Floyd, as well as the ins and outs of the band and it's individual members. It also contains never before seen photo's and copies of concert and tour hand bills, tickets and newspaper clippings.
But Pink Floyd: In the Flesh is far more than a history of the band. It details the complete performance history up to the current year, with the exact date of each concert, and tour, and in many cases what songs were played. The data is concise, exact, and informative. No reference guide has ever been as accurate nor as complete. |

Roger Waters solo career, albums, concerts, and tours are hardly even mentioned until the end of the book. And then, the section devoted to Roger spans only 6 pages with very few photographs!!!
Where Gilmour's Floyd wouldn't give the books authors the time of day, 'others' in the opposing camp were very helpful. And this is their reward, Six pages!! Now, I know this book is about "Pink Floyd", and not Roger Waters. However, the former leader and co-founder of Pink Floyd, who was responsible for a vast majority of the bands music and lyrics warrants more than 6 pages.

The creative genius which led Pink Floyd to stardom and fame deserves much more that what amounts to a mere footnote!! To encapsulate the last 14 years of Roger's solo career into only a few pages at the back of a 256 page book seems more than a bit insulting!
Shit, even Dave Gilmour, who was not a founding member, nor an original member of the band, gets 8 pages detailing his extremly short (don't want to work hard again) 2 year solo career! And he wrote only a small portion of Pink Floyd's music in comparison, making his money and career off Roger's genius. Also, the fact that Pink Floyd: In the Flesh is such a high quality publication is truly commendable, but it's excellence can have it's drawbacks. A Journey Through Time and Space with Pink Floyd , is a large 82 X 11 in. paperback which can be toted anywhere and roughly handled without thought or care. Pink Floyd: In the Flesh however is so nice and of such high quality, you almost hate to open it too many times for fear of bending the binding, wrinkling a page, or smudging any of the truly great photographs. |

Nevertheless, Glenn Povey is to be more than commended for this fantastic work. His years of commitment and work have been rewarded. For, in my opinion, this is one of the best and most detailed and complete works about Pink Floyd ever written. The accuracy of the concert dates is unparalleled, and as a reference it is more complete than any other. It is truly the best of both worlds. It is both a Pink Floyd history book and Pink Floyd reference volume in one. I heartily recommend it to every Pink Floyd fan!
