From REG Issue #19

fter Pink Floyd released Dark Side of the Moon in 1973, Roger began writing some new songs. Pink Floyd began experimenting, playing the new songs in concert during their tours of Dark Side of the Moon in 1974 and 1975.
These songs were "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," "Raving and Drooling," and "Gotta Be Crazy."

It was six months after their tours in 1975 that "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was released on the album Wish You Were Here. The lyrics Roger had written earlier had not changed at all and became the lyrics to "Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts 1-5." A new verse was written for parts 6-9. The other songs "Raving and Drooling," and "Gotta Be Crazy," were never released. However, they were re-written and 2 years later, they became the songs "Sheep," and "Dogs" respectively, and released on the album Animals.

Though the music of the songs themselves remained somewhat intact, Roger had almost entirely re-written the lyrics. One of our REG members thought it would be nice if we printed the original lyrics from "Raving and Drooling," and "Gotta Be Crazy." Though these songs were never released in their original form, thanks to another REG member who reminded me that the lyrics were actually published on the back page of the 1974 and 1975 Pink Floyd comic book tour program. I had attended the show at the Cow Palace in South San Francisco in 1975 and fortunately still have my program. (Fortunately, because I was so wasted on acid at the show, I don't know how I held on to anything.) And sure enough, published at the back of the program are the lyrics.

During the '74 and '75 tours, Pink Floyd would play these three new songs in sequential order, first "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," "Raving and Drooling" (Roger introduced this song as during the 1974 tours as "Raving and Drooling I Fell On His Neck With a Scream," and later shortening it to just Raving and Drooling) and then "Gotta Be Crazy" (Roger introduced this alternately as "You Gotta Be Crazy.")

So for those not lucky enough to have seen this tour, or those who have not been able to understand Roger singing the words, here are the lyrics:

Raving and Drooling

Raving and drooling I fell on his neck with a scream
He had a whole lotta terminal shock in his eyes
That's what you get for pretending the rest are not real

Babbling and snapping at far away flies
he will zig zag his way back though
memories of boredom and pain

How does it feel to be empty and angry and
spaced

Split up the middle between the illusion of
safety in numbers and the fist in your face

Gotta Be Crazy

You gotta be crazy, you gotta be mean
You gotta keep your kids and your car clean
You gotta keep climbing, you gotta keep fit
You gotta keep smiling, you gotta eat shit

You gotta be small to be a big shot
You gotta eat meat to stay at the top
You gotta be trusted, gotta tell lies
You gotta be able to narrow your eyes

You gotta believe they've gotta believe you
You gotta appear to be easy to see through
Gotta be sure you look good on the T.V.
Gotta resemble a human being

You gotta keep one eye over your shoulder
Gonna get harder as you get older
Gotta fly south and hide in the sand
Gotta forget that your gonna get cancer

And when you lose control, you'll reap
the harvest you have sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood
slows and turns to stone
And it's to late to loose the weight you
used to need to throw around
So have a good drown as you go down
alone
Dragged down by the stone

Gotta be sure, you gotta be quick
Gotta divide the tame from the sick
Gotta keep some of us docile and fit
You gotta keep everyone buying this shit

They gotta get you started early
Processed by the time you're thirty
Work like fuck till your sixty five
And then your time's your own until
you die

I gotta admit to lot of confusion
Pain in the head is the child of collusion
Gotta resist the creeping malaise
You gotta believe in the way you get
out of the maze
But you, you just keep on pretending
You can tell a sucker from a friend
But you still raise the knife to
stranger, lover, friend and foe alike.

Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was sent out to play on his own
Who was raised on a diet of shame
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with bridle and bit
Who was given a seat in the stand
Who was forcing his way to the rails
Who was offered a place on the board
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone.

During 1985 Roger began work on what was to become his second solo album Radio KAOS. He began by reminiscing about his childhood and past. The first song he wrote, "Get Back To Radio," was a ballad which was not even on the final work. As Roger describes it, "...thematically it was about growing older and wondering whether I was any good anymore. That was the first I had started writing about any of this stuff. ...that triggered something in me that allowed other things to come out. It started me thinking about my relationship to radio...", Remembering how he used to listen to the Radio alone at night.

Listening to Radio Luxembourg and the US Military radio. Listening to American blues and jazz from little known black artists. The Radio was an escape for Roger and his generation, a way to obtain communication and information from the world outside.

This was the song that began the theme of Roger's concept album Radio KAOS. And though this song was deemed the wrong tempo for inclusion on the album, it was released as a B-side of the singles "The Tide Is Turning," and "Sunset Strip."

Another song, not included on the Radio KAOS album, "Going To Live In LA," was also released as a B-side on the single "Radio Waves." This is a song about Benny, the son of a Welsh coal miner. It is obvious, that this song was written before the story of Billy and his brother Benny was perfected. This song basically tells the story from the perspective of young Benny (instead of Billy), and what happened after the Welsh coal mines were closed and thousands lost their jobs. Apparently, Benny's Father was arrested and put in prison after the ensuing riots. It is because of the closure of the coal mines, and the imprisonment of his father, that Benny's mother 'Molly' could not take care of him, and she had to send him to live in LA with her brother, his uncle Dave.

I don't know why this song was not included on the album, it would have worked in fantastically well as part of the story after the song "Who Needs Information." Except that Roger would have had to have changed character of Benny to Billy.

A third song not released on the album "Molly's Song," sounds as if originally it was written to be apart of the album story and sound effects between songs. It is a song about the heartache of a mother, Molly missing her son that she had to send away. Another tragedy of the closing of the Welsh coal mines.

Because this song was sung so well by Doreen Chanter, it was released as a 'live' recording B-side, on the US only single "Who Needs Information." The song was never recorded in a studio, and only ever done live in concert. Another REG member, suggested that REG print the lyrics for these unreleased Roger Waters songs as well. So here they are:

Get Back to Radio

Like an ember
Glowing in the dark
I have almost grown cold

Frozen like a soldier
Standing by the flag-pole
Like a player
they all said was too old
I have been tempted
To hand in my key

But I am not alone
I feel you are with me
I will not be a packet of crap on MTV

I am a man
I will not be a number
Get back to radio
Get back to radio

Now I am a flame
I will be a fire again
Carolyn Ann, give me your hand

Like a volcano
Getting ready to blow
The new generation waits by its radio

God bless Bob Geldof
Get back to radio
Get back to radio
Get back

All you want was a chance

Going to Live In LA

Molly stood still in the rain and wept
Young Benny kicked stones down the courthouse step
The police linked arms in a line to hold back the crowd

"How much longer, Mum" said Ben
"Why's that policeman kicking that man
Can we have a bit of jam on our bread today"

Then the whistle blew and the gates swung back
"Wave" said Molly, Ben waved his cap
At two eyes looking through a little slot
Like someone dying in a letter box

And Molly said
"Say goodbye to the valley
Say goodbye to the rain"
Through the miracle of telecommunications
In the private sector
We got a message today

Your Great Uncle David, your great Uncle David
The one who went to the U.S.A.
The one with the swimming pool and the palm trees
And the big dog, the big dog
Has asked you to stay, to stay

And you're going, going, going, going
To live in LA
Going, going, going

Oh, Hollywood hills
Oh, midnight thrills
Benny, your time has come
Oh, oh, Benny, don't drink the water
Stay away from the cocaine slaughter
Oh, Benny, if you don't get caught, you'll have some fun
And I'm going to him
Benny, Benny, yeah

Oh, oh, Benny, be cool, don't drink the water
Oh, oh, Benny, stay away from the bosses daughter
And there is a hundred miles of sushi bars
And Pastel convertible cars
And up on Mulholland Drive
Where Warren Beatty locks himself in his safe at night just to stay
alive

Nothing's going on

Molly's Song

Jim:

"O.K., let's get back to Billy
Billy
Yo, Billy"
Billy:
"I'm sorry, Jim I was miles away keeping an eye on Molly"
Jim:
"You were keeping an eye on Molly I thought Molly lived in Wales"
Billy:
"Through enhanced surveillance satellite I can read a newspaper from five hundred miles high, Jim"
Jim:
"Let me get this clear You're trying to tell me that you can keep an eye on Molly by hacking into a government's satellite

Come on"
Hold tight
Baby, feel the starlight
There is a glow in the sky tonight
Moving, could be a satellite

Is it friendly
Then, will it bring me closer to thee
Heart to heart
Or will it keep us apart, Ben

Benny, Benny, Ben
When you coming home
'Cos I need you, Ben
And I want you, Ben
Right now, right here

Benny, Benny, Ben
Since you've been gone
I've been so lonely, Ben
And I'm missing you, Benny
And I know you are too
Oh yeah, oh yeah

Benny, Benny, Ben
When you coming home
It's not a home without you, Benny
And I'm missing you so much
Be with me, lovin me

Goodbye, little spy in the sky
They say that cameras don't lie
Am I happy, am I sad
Am I good, am I bad

Ooh, oh, Benny, Benny, when you coming home
I miss you
