The Results!!!

From REG Issue #9

Thank you all for the great response to our first membership poll. And a special thanks to Roman Guzman who took on the huge chore of compileing all your answers into a cohesive document and tabulating the results. The following are your answers to the questions regarding your favorite and not so favorite Roger Waters and Pink Floyd music, concerts, and videos. I have also included some of your comments regarding the questions and your answers.

1. How old are you?

Average age of our members is 25. From our youngest member at 14, to our oldest at 45.
2. Sex (M/F)
Our club is about 10 -15% female, and 85% male. Of the Poll respondents, 95% were male, 5% were female
3. How many years have you listened to Roger Waters solo?
The average amount of time of our members listening to Roger Waters solo is 7 years.
4. How many years have you listened to Pink Floyd (old or new or both, Specify which)?
Average years listening to Pink Floyd is 10.8
60% specified both new and old.
40% specified old only.
5. What's your opinion of the new Pink Floyd versus old Pink Floyd?
A) Better (optional: brief opinion)
B) Worse (optional: brief opinion)
C) About the same

0% felt new Floyd was better than old Floyd.
75% felt new Floyd is worse than old Floyd.
25% felt that they were about the same.

Here are some comments from our membership to this question;

  • The New Pink Floyd is so different from the old Pink Floyd. I like the old Floyd better, but the new Floyd is not that bad.

  • Pink Floyd without Roger is not Pink Floyd, the lyrical magic is missing.

  • New Floyd is worse because of the lack of creativity indicated in at least one way by the number of credits of non Floyd members on the new album.

  • I never bought A Momentary Lapse of Reason or The Division Bell. If I hear it on the radio it makes me sad (cause it's not real Pink Floyd), so I turn to a different station.

  • The music of the new Floyd lacks the passion and individuality the old stuff had. The music is safe now, nothing new!.

  • There have been several variations of Floyd members;
    a) Barrett/Waters/Wright/Mason, (Piper... & Saucerful...)
    b) Waters/Gilmour/Wright/Mason, (Saucerful - The Wall)
    c) Waters/Gilmour/Mason, (The Final Cut)
    d) Gilmour/Mason, (AMLOR & Delicate Sound...)
    e) Gilmour/Mason/Wright (Division Bell).

    So there is not really an 'old Pink Floyd' and a new one. Of course, everybody is free to define for himself where musical periods start and finish within the nearly 30 years of the bands existence. My definitions however, are not the same as the AOL users, who seem to have reduced the developments which took place after The Final Cut to a kind of computer game where one side (Waters) fights against the other one (Gilmour).

  • The Lyrics of the new Floyd Suck!! The melodies are still excellent, however the song Take It Back really sucks!

  • New Floyd is all flash and no passion!

  • MLOR was OK, but The Division Bell is clear proof that what is left of and unfortunately still is Pink Floyd, is just a bunch of solid but uncreative musicians.

  • The new Floyd has almost no meaning, no feeling, and doesn't sound as good as old Floyd. Compared to other bands today The Division Bell sounds pretty good though.

  • About the same. Worse is too harsh a word. No solo work is as good as the old Floyd classics like DSOTM, or WYWH. That were the greatest albums ever recorded and next to impossible to match.
6. What's your opinion of Roger Waters solo versus new Pink Floyd?
A) Better than new Pink Floyd (optional: brief opinion)
B) Worse than new Pink Floyd (optional: brief opinion)
C) About the same as new Pink Floyd

65% felt that Rog solo is better than new Floyd.
10% felt that they are about the same.
25% had no comment!
Some of the most notable opinions of our members are as follows:

  • Roger's Amused to Death is the full crystallization of the Pink Floyd formula and sound, the new Floyd couldn't do that

  • Waters solo efforts carry much more passion and energy than either Gilmour Floyd albums.

  • It is obvious even to the casual listener that Roger was the creative force behind what is what we all know as Pink Floyd. The latest effort by the group is just an attempt to cash in on their past success. When they have a Pink Floyd Hour on QVC they have hit bottom in my opinion.

  • As far as the post 1983 albums are concerned, I prefer AMLOR and Delicate Sound of Thunder to Pros & Cons and Radio KAOS, but I think that Amused To Death is much better than The Division Bell.

  • Isn't it obvious?! Amused To Death is a fucking masterpiece! Roger Waters really knows how to combine intelligent lyrics with great melodies. I still believe the best is yet to come. I can only hope that he doesn't waste too much time fucking around with a BroadWay version of The Wall. (I get sick just thinking about it.)

  • While Roger Waters still goes along the lines of the old and the only Pink Floyd, the so called new Pink Floyd goes NOWHERE, well to be more specific sounds like a combination of Bruce Springstien, Bryan Adams, U2, and country pop.

  • The new Floyd has no soul, gut, or originality. A good analogy is like comparing a pint of nonalcoholic beer and normal beer. The new Floyd has no flavor, bite, strength, and is rather bland really!

  • About the same, but I would lean more strongly towards better. There was a wonderful counter balance between Gilmour's guitar, and Waters lyrics and music. Waters' direction is the force which drove the Floyd to become one of the greatest bands of all time. I do however, like Gilmour's idea of a loosely based concept instead of a specific storyline. I would be interested in what lyrics Rog would have written for MLOR or The Division Bell, but alas...

A) Yes 50%
B) No 45%
5% had no comment

One Members comment;

One of the themes of this band has always been absence of other band members. Legally, sure they have every right and should pay Rog for his songs and give him full credit for his accomplishments. After looking at this debate from every angle, all I can say is that It's sad that four talented musicians couldn't get along well enough to continue a career together. It would have been interesting what would have developed had the four stayed together.

20. If Roger Waters took the Pink Floyd name without Gilmour in the band and toured with Wright & Mason, do you think he would have the right to call himself "Pink Floyd"? (Yes/No)

A) Yes 75%
B) No 15%
10% had no comment

21. Reasoning? (only if 19 and 20 are DIFFERENT from each other)(Try to be brief)

Roger Waters wrote most of the words and music.
Roger Waters is the essence of Pink Floyd.

22. Right to call themselves Pink Floyd with:

A) Gilmour & Mason only?
B) Gilmour & Wright only?
C) Gilmour & Waters only?
D) Mason & Wright only?
E) Waters & Mason only?
F) Waters & Wright only?
G) Gilmour alone?
H) Waters alone?
I) Mason alone?
J) Wright alone?

NOTE: Please feel free to leave a brief explanation of your reasoning behind questions 22 A-J.
The winners here were as follows;

  1. (C) Dave & Rog
  2. (E) and (F) Rog & Nick and Rog & Rick
  3. (H) and (B) Dave & Rick and Roger alone

Here are some of the comments from our members to these questions;

  • You need a whole band to call themselves Pink Floyd not part of one.

  • I think that Roger Waters still holds the copyright to the name "The Pink Floyd Sound" and he should tour with that name. Seriously, Roger has said that either he wants to be known as Roger Waters or nothing at all, which I think is an honorable desire, but touring with anything labeled Pink is the Key and the popularity of the Roger Waters name becomes a moot point, a given.

  • Let's face it, Pink Floyd would not be the band that it is today without the contributions of Waters or Gilmour over the years. They need each other to be considered Pink Floyd in my book.

  • My answers to all the above are yes except for G and H. I think that even Tim Renwick, Guy Pratt, Gary Wallis, Jon Carin, Durga McBroom, and Scott Page would make a great band. They could use the name Pink Floyd too!
