From the Sao Paulo Brazil Show
at the Paceaembu
March 14, 2002

(Flickering Flame encore played again!)

From: Maria Fernanda Menezes
In the Flesh Tour, Sao Paulo, March 14th, 2002. Everybody waited so much... the energy was so good, the gig was so great! The show started at 9:50PM, and the crowd seemed not to believe that, yes, Roger Waters was there!

The sound was so perfect that some people looked up to the sky when the helicopter sound started before "Another Brick..." It made me remember when I used to arrive home, lay down and listen to "The Dark Side of the Moon" paying attention on the surround effects I always loved. I felt this very sensation yesterday, and I (and everyone) just cried and cried.

The top was: after the 20 minute break, he came back with "Breathe", then "Time", and "Money". Oh boy, what a sequence! The sky was full of stars, but there were lightnings all over the horizon, but no rain, that made those moments magical.

And at the end everyone stood still in their seats, screaming, crying, or just in silence watching the sky, cause the memory left is so strong and so emotional and visceral, that it for sure made this day, March 14th, 2002, unforgettable for the ones that were there.

The show started at 9:50PM with Roger Waters climbing slowly the stairs to the plataform on the stage. The fires announced: the show had begun with "In The Flesh". The introduction of "The Happiest Days of Hour Lives" made everybody search an helicopter in the skies - it was the first time that quadriphonic surround sound was used in a stadium show in Brazil.

"Dogs" was marcant. Roger and the three guitarrists sat down at a table and started to play poker, while the other members of the band played the psicodelics moments of the song. The sound of dogs barking made the woman at my side search the animals around.

One of the more thrilling moments occoured at "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (1-5)", when the Syd's image came up in the screen. The public closed to the tears. "Wish You Were Here", of course, made everyone sing. The first part of the concert ended with "Shine On (6-9)". The classics of Dark Side of the Moon was superb - "Breathe", "Time" and "Money".

His solo redentions was spetacular, specially "Perfect Sense part 1" (P P Arnold suprised everyone with her poweful voice), "Perfect Sense part 2" (everyone footed and sung) and "Amused to Death" (no comments about this one). In "Comfortably Numb", Roger forgot his shame and ran from side to side of the stage.

The guitarists were superb. Encore was "Flickering Flame". I'm sure that no one will ever forget this show. "It was the greatest show on earth", Roger said in "Amused to Death". He is absolutely right. If you are thinking to go to the show, no think, just go.

I somehow suspected I wouldn't come home the same. And in fact I didn't. Above all, the perfect harmony shared by Roger Waters and his audience impressed me and allowed me to deeply understand how people hide themselves behind their own images. Anyway, for at least three hours I could cherish that "flickering" feeling that things are in tune under the sun.

It took me some days to come back to Earth and give proper attention to my daily life again. Now I can write about it and mainly thank Roger for the love he has multiplied through his show experience. I left my heart in Roger Water's show and hope he comes to Brazil again to give it back.

Roger, your art is better than I expected. In my humble opinion, the only gods that probably exist are the poets, musicians and artists. You are one of the greatest and certainly the one I believe most!

As a Colombian, none of us dream of seeing a rock superstar in any city of the country (Santana were in Bogota for one day in the eighties, and David Gilmour like a phantom in the nineties, made a low profile show in Cali), we live, for so many reasons, on the edge of their tours.

My wife Tatiana (29) and I (44) live on a farm, twenty kilometers east of Medellin, and our favorite musicians are three music guardians: Laurie Anderson, Peter Gabriel and Roger Waters. On the web I keep updated on information about their shows, tours or interviews.

The last year I knew about the In The Flesh Tour, and when I saw that it included South America a dream began to blow in my head. It was saturday and my wife was sleeping. When she woke up, I looked at her and said: "I've got a very good news for you: Roger Waters will be on tour next year, and he will tour in South America" Her eyes (she has almond and brown eyes) inmediately shone brightly, and she said: "Now I have a new dream". After that, we lived every day with that dream: to see Roger Waters, if possible, in the first row seats! However, our budget buried those exagerated illusions. The fact is that searching the web for prices we thought that Brazil was the best choice possible, and the plan was to see him in Rio, and in Sao Paulo, too.

Sao Paulo: The show was on March 15, and it was impossible to buy tickets on the14; Well, our budget did not allow us to pay $350 Reais seats, so, we bought our $40 tickets. The show began half hour later than was planned (because the heavy rain of the afternoon affected the equipment). From this venue, the show was radically different, than in Rio, though the sound was perfect and you could not percive any difference in the sound from that of the first class seats. The audiovisual perspective was panoramical, we had a different perception because the visual images were generated behind the screens. There was always a global perception that included: musicians, spot lights directed to the archibancadas, fans, sounds, videos ... but the show generated a different ambient feeling and an aura emotional intensity... a dream again? Of course, it seemed exactly saw the same things we did in Rio, in Pacaembu Stadium, but this time, the first saxophone solo was great, and I heard a change Roger Waters made in the song In The Flesh: the original lyric says: I got some bad news for you sunshine, Pink isnt well, he stayed back at the hotel... this time he sang: I got some goods for you sunshine, Pink isnt well... (surprise, surprise, surprise) in a sardonic mode Waters changde the meaning and I smile when I remember it because I understand that the second Pink Floyd is better in the hotel than in the studio.

The end: yesterday late at night, in my home again, I found the REG site and a request for a review. I slept with the idea of doing it today (Saturday) in the morning. And you know, I had another dream, I was eighteen and Roger Waters (in the dream he was a woman, with the same personality of him) was in my house and she(he) was looking with my friends and I at the movie THE WALL on my VCR. At the end, my friends dissapeared, and she (he) wanted to leave, my father waited for her in the car, but all my family wanted to talk with her. I suggested to her that we listen to some latin american musicians, like Manu Chao (I dont know if he really is latin american), she said: Yes, and I began to search but I couldn't find the music, so fearing that she wanted to leave, I talked to her about my thesis ( I am specialist in Semiotics and Hermeneutics of Art, and my thesis application was titled: Practical Monographie to conjure away THE WALL disease, obviusly, it was about THE WALL), and she seemed interested. I began again to search for it but I couldn't find it either... so then I heard my dog Ciruela walking into our room. I woke up and I was surprised myself about this dream. And I asked myself: what kind of material are the dreams made of?
