Globe Arena

From the Stockholm Sweden Show
at the Globe Arena
May 25, 2002

I just got back to LA from Stockholm. After spending several hours in front of The Grand Hotel in Stockholm and seeing Snowy, Andy, Harry and others leave in separate cars to the Globe Arena, Roger finally walked out of the hotel around 3:30pm to awaiting fans. Roger being always as generous as can be, stood and signed for the 5-6 fans before heading to the show.

The show started promptly at 7:45pm and they played the same set as the US up till after "Dogs", where "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Son" was next to be played. The Complete 10 parts of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" was then played with "Welcome To The Machine" and "Wish You Were Here" inserted as they are on the LP. After the blazing ending to part 10 to "Shine On....." (added since the U.S. leg of the tour ) a 20 minute intermission then followed, with the same set being played in the second half of the US show.Since the U.S. leg of the tour, original video from the 1970's has been added as a backdrop instead of the stills of the U.S. shows.

Roger looked a bit tired at first, playing Oslo the previous night, but really kicked it in during the second half of the show. Snowy was magnificent, but Graham continues to steal the show playing a pounding set of drums. The only downer that I could see, is the band, overall, looked a bit board. Perhaps it's from playing the same songs, basically in the same order, for two years now. It would be a treat for the fans, and maybe for Roger, to interject 2-4 different songs each night. Spice up, which is already one of the finest tours, from one of rocks truest genious's.

Anyways, the show was hot, and worth every cent that I paid to fly out and see it. How can a fan ever thank Roger for such a terrific show and for a generation of brilliant music... maybe just to enjoy the show.

Hi- I'm a member of REG - The International Roger Waters Fan Club from Sweden. And here is the verdict from the Swedish jury. Roger Waters In The Flesh show at the Globe: 8 out of 10 points. Yes of course did I like the show. But I think there were times when he could have turned up the volume. For example the last solo on "Its a miracle" should be like a knife cutting through your heart. Sorry but I dont now any English expression, but I think You understand me.

The best part of the show for me, was the beginning of "Perfect Sense (1)". The searching lights, and "Dave", "Stop Dave", "My mind is going", sweeping from every speaker all around me. And the community-singing chorus of the national anthem part in the second half. What a hair-raising performance. The only thing I missed was the Flying Pig.

I also distributed about 500 REG flyers before the show. So maybe there will be some new REG club members coming from Sweden. And I also wore my REG membership-card round my neck. And that one was a real eyecatcher! Well that's all for now.

Hi, I attended the gig in Stockholm (Sweden, Europe) last saturday. A brilliant show. The only thing I missed was "Each small candle". Instead he played "Flickering Flame" which isn't as good as "ESC". Sometimes I also missed the Gilmour solos.
Best regards

Well, my first European show and in such a beautiful city on such a beautiful day.

One of the reasons I choose this show was that the venue looked so fantastic - a giant golf ball - and on the train into Stockholm it certainly was un-missable easily soaring above the rest of the skyline around it. Made up for the 4 hour delay on the train ride from Copenhagen. Nice to see that it's not just British trains that are crap. ;-)

On show day went to the meet at a bar near the venue - a lovely place that served great food - I thoroughly recommend the meatballs ;-). Whilst finishing them and a beer, I was accosted from behind by Si and Phil with Jens and Emil. They all took a seat and ordered food whilst we caught up and Si, and the others regaled us with stories of their European tour and imparted my stories of my Australian tour.

We caught the metro to the venue, as I wasn't convinced about Si saying it was only a short walk!! Two metro stops later and what would have been a 30 minute walk we arrived at the Globe - it was now 7.20 and showtime was 7.30. Glad I decided not to walk! ;-)

From the outside - close up - the Globe is indeed fantastic and HUGE. Security was a bit tight with body pat downs but nothing too difficult if you wanted to get recorders in - eh lads ;-)

First impressions of the inside was RED - very RED, everything is red ;-). Our seats were on the first tier at the back just to the right of the soundboard (the good lady Jill is still on track and really beginning to enjoy the shows - indoctrination is the only way! This was her 9th ITF show over 3 years and she has cracked - job done).

The arena has a hotel attached and I guess that a bar or restaurant from it looks down into the arena, but tonight the guests were getting no views as there was a huge curtain covering it. The show started the customary 15 minutes later than that on the tickets - but without the fireworks start. A shame really cause without them the really dramatic effect of ITF is lessened. A good show with the sound level being far more sensible that the previous 02 shows I have seen.

Same setlist and Flickering Flame as the encore. A couple of obvious changes on this leg of the tour - during the ATD stuff the house lights are put on to simulate lighting - on and off three times. Also during It's a Miracle, Rog disappears to the back of the stage covered in green light for the "years and years" bit. Slide and film shows are all the same.

For me this was the best 02 show so far, although the crowd was a bit talky through some bits when they really should shut up - maybe it was just the arseholes around me? But generally quiet during the low bits.

From my seat I could see the light projection console and watch the screens they use to control what is projected - a very impressive system of two projectors to give one image on the stage.

After the show we hung around the venue which is surrounded by bars. It is so odd to see as usually everyone just does a runner which leaves you with a feeling of emptiness, but tonight all the bars had Floyd playing, so the atmosphere was continued. A lesson to be learned there by many other countries. Also the transport system isn't deluged with people. I was really impressed. Jens seems to be a real sausage connoisseur as that's all he seems to eat and think about - although Si did warn me that it got dangerous when he drinks Coke as well, as he tends to burp - and apparently in a confined space like a car the garlic smell can be vicious (lol).

On the metro station heading back to the hotel also met up with George from Austria who had come over to the UK for the Gilmour shows (Meltdown and 01). We'd first met him at Scranton in 99 (now there was a show lol). Said he was also going to Copenhagen so made plans to meet up there

Best show so far but looking forward to Copenhagen next week.
