"What did you do with my fucking pig?"
I was front row center at Roger Waters's 63rd birthday party last night
(September 6th) at the PNC Bank Arts Center. Wow what an amazing evening!!!
The set list was the same as the European Tour but there were a couple of
little surprises.
I have to say being that close to Roger was unbelievable. He was in
excellent form and the sound was amazing, crystal clear! I am amazed at the
energy that man has for his age. I didn't notice any lip-syncing at all.
Roger was only a few yards away from me! A previous review noted that there
was a voice playback in the beginning of Money, untrue. PP started singing a
little early.
Every song was a highlight for me even Money and Another brick kicked ass!
I was bombarded with bubbles during set the controls and shine on, being
right next to the bubble machine.
Then comes Leaving Beirut, many booed after this song. A guy behind me
started yelling at the stage and called Roger an asshole because "are boys
are dying over there" but my friends out on the lawn said that it was well
received. So it just sounded like a lot more people then it really was. I
don't understand the American mentality, completely uninformed and
propagandized. This administration and the Christian right have hijacked our
country from us and these people support them. Are they nuts? Where are our
jobs going? India? These guys don't give a shit about us! At least Roger
does! I don't like GW, never did! Don't you dare tell me that Roger doesn't
care about our boys because he opposes GW and the war. He wants them home
with their families. Now that's somebody who cares! Everything that GW
touches turns to shit. If people left the show because of this song, it was
only a few... and good riddance.
Sorry about that. Now on to sheep.
It took a minute for things to settle down. During the Lord's Prayer, I
noticed people turning around and Wow! The Pig!
A guy dressed up as a butcher, complete with knives, was walking around with
the Pig attached to him. Then, according to my friends on the lawn, the pig
was sent to the moon!
Great Set!
The second set was Dark side performed perfectly. I was a little
disappointed that Roger was only going out to the left and right edge of the
stage all night. Then during Comfortably Numb, Roger comes out to the edge
of the stage directly in front of me and sings the last verse of the song. I
was stunned!!!
Before leaving the stage he points at the lawn and says:
"What did you do with my fucking pig?"
Everyone that has
tickets for future shows have something really wonderful to look forward to. I
am 52 years old and have been a fan for many years and the songs still sound
superb!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the great website. The set list was the same as all
of the shows after the first one in Lisbon and the encore was the same, also.
The only downer was when Roger got very political with the
war and fans were booing, probably about people in the crowd, but that soon ended once
DSOTM started rocking. Standing ovations all over the place at the end of the
show and both encores.
In the flesh
Mother
Set the controls for the heart of the Sun
Shine on you Crazy Diamond (1-3)
Have A Cigar (Great shots of Syd!!)
Wish You were Here
Southhampton Dock
The Fletcher Memorial Home
Perfect Sense Parts 1 and 2 (The song of the night for me!)
Leaving Beirut
Sheep
Roger introduced "Leaving Beirut", with his longest sililoquy of the evening. He remarked also "There's no better place I'd rather spend my Birthday than here with you" (A half ass effort at Happy Birthday failed in the audience) The message of "Leaving Beirut" was a bit too direct for many, not unexpectedly (and sadly) many in the crowd booed "Leaving Beirut", typical America failing to grasp the message for the messenger. What was even funnier was many in the crowds failure to see Roger's irony of following "Leaving Beirut" with "Sheep"!! Beautiful! Rogers smirk at the booing was perfect. Rogers message when too blatant will always get the response he wants, but while agree with the song somewhat, I do like his more subtle anti-war references.

Andy, Snowy and Dave played great guitar with Dave being as great a substitute for David Gilmour's vocals as you'll get, but I was diappointed at the closing riff for "Sheep". I believe it to be the Floyd's best song and the best signature riff in rock, it was more subdued than I liked, but that really was my only compaint with set one.
Set two, Full on Dark Side of the Moon. A bit of a misstep with Money, Jon Carin started his backing vocals for Money too early no one noticed. My biggest disappointment was his vocals on "Us and Them", I just didn't like it; but hey it was still excellent.
The whole Set was awesome! Having seen it the first time in 1973 and having NO RECOLLECTION of that event since I was only 10 at the time and hiding behind a fence, it was clearly one of the highlights of my concert going life!
The funniest moment came in the audience when a girl a few rows in front of me was dancing to "Breathe", but when they segued into "On the Run" she kept TRYING to dance....! She finally gave up and moved to another seat...
The encore was like Europe as well:
Happiest Days of our Lives
Another Brick in the Wall Pt 2
Vera
Bring the Boys Back Home (Which ironically again got a rousing cheer from the
audience that booed Leaving Beirut!!)
Comfortably Numb
Roger proved himself the icon once again! A Great night!
I hope you enjoyed my review.
Regards
Jay
I just want to give a big thank you to Roger for all the years of his great music for all of us to enjoy... And I will say, he is getting better, as he gets older....
Still in heaven...
Roger puts on such an amazing show, he had so many explosions and fireworks I felt the heat from the pyrotechnics.
The sound he had was truley the best, it seemed to have a 360 degree sound system.
The highlights for me was by far was "Leaving Beirut." Other highlights were "Sheep" / "The Flecther Memorial Home" and "Bring the Boys Back Home."
It was his birthday so I held up a happy birthday sign, and he gave me a thank you and a head nod! This is still burned in my memory, hopefully it stays for awhile. Among many stage connections, that was the best.
He also had a huge floating astronaut during "Perfect Sense" which made everything
so cool and surreal. He also had a huge and I mean HUGE! giant floating pig - this
is where it gets interesting. I was in the 8th row so i had to turn around to see it, so
i didn't watch it the whole time, but many of my friends who were sitting on the
lawn seats said that the pig flew away. I'm certain this wasn't part of the show.
Either someone cut the cords, or it was possibly human error, but I'd like to see if he
can get another for his shows next week in New York. It was the best night!! A great time!!
Nice to hear DSOTM.
IT WAS THE VENUE STUPID!
Addendum to my review for Waters Sept. 6 in Holmdel.
My critique of the sound I
now realize was due to the venue. PNC Bank Arts Center is beautiful and has
character and nice video screens. However, at the Waters show the sound was very
distorted IF you were sitting near the side walls down in the orchestra. I saw
the show later at Camden (Sept. 16)Êand the sound was near perfection. I also saw
Santana at PNC Bank Arts Ctr. and the sound is nice if you are in the center.
It was everything I wanted to hear from Pink Floyd and it was topped off by the Dark Side of the Moon. The sound was amazing!
The show was almost a perfect ten, outside of the personal political views displayed in Waters
new songs. That did not go over well with the crowd. But it was his show and his birthday,
so let it be!
Sheep was the best! He should have played the entire Animals album and then some.Ê
What an unappreciated album!!!
During the show this past Sept, which happened to be his birthday, Roger got a little political and the Pro George Bush fans jeered him. I was looked at quite strangley amongst the audiance as I cheered Roger voicing his opinion which was shared by many of us.
As always I loved the show. Through the years I've been to atleast 10 shows and they always pack the same punch. Full of excitement and a bit of nostalgia.
We missed the 2nd part of the show on Sept. 6th. We had to leave early because my son had school the next day. Although I was being a good father and bringing him to an awesome first concert, I had to be responsible to get him to bed at a reasonable hour too.
Thanks for all the great memories.
