Here you go... my 13 year old stepson and I go to the bathroom during the intermission. The lines are long
even for the mens room. While in line, my stepson sees his very first naked woman, as a woman too
impatient to wait in line decides to strip down in order to... uh... relieve herself against a fence (you'd have to
find and ask her why she did this). We get into the bathroom and then Dark Side starts, a bunch of
guys start singing along to "Breathe" in the men's room.
We get out only to find that many of the drunken,
stoned, and generally asshole fans from the lawn section decide to bum rush security to get to the lower
lodge section, thus creating a monsterous traffic jam of humanity that I rampage though with my stepson
in tow. A few guys threatened to spill their beers on the people below if not given a path ahead of us. I
respond with a resounding "fuck you spill it then". After holding back a group of guys to allow a Mom to
walk her two kids out of the mayhem I go back with my stepson to our seats in my beer soaked Pink Floyd
shirt.
During "Time" a guy was arguing with a security lady over where his seat was. He was stoned out of his
mind and could not understand that his seats were in the better section below, so in his drunken/stoned
shamblings he ended up in a higher section! The layout of Verizon Ampitheater makes downgrading your
ticket a difficult proposition unless you are truly truly wasted! (I hope he made it home alive) Given the
events as they transpired during the Dark Side songs, struck me as very ironic.
Normally these types of events ruin concerts for me, but the strong context of Dark Side's lyrics about
how one chooses to live their life and what they choose to pursue, I gathered additional meaning.
What I've always taken pride in was that I have done more than hear Roger's voice, I choose to listen as
well, and being surrounded by people who used Dark Side as another excuse to get stoned and drunk and act
out like assholes intensified the experience of the power of the lyrics.
But overall it was a great show. The political Pig was set free at the end of Sheep and probably enjoyed his flight over
the Republican Party's cash register known as Orange County. Hopefully, Roger will tour again and
my younger sons will be old enough to see him.
I will start by saying the band and Roger were in top form. The visuals and sound were excellent as well.
What made this show very bizarre were some of the oddball antics of the crowd.
I was also surprised that in spite of the venue being in the heart of Republican
Hell in Orange County, no one was freaked out by the politics in the show. I heard
more negatives at the Hollywood Bowl last October. My only complaint about the
venue was that I paid 130.00 for seats all the way to the far left of the arena
and so I couldn't see the screen or the fireworks. I did have a pretty good view
of the band though, and I guess that's the most important part. Also I didn't like
the laser prism as much as I liked the traditional light prism used earlier in
the tour. Also a few more songs from Rogers solo career would have been nice. All
in all though, it was an amazing night of fantastic music!!!!
We were sitting 14 rows back in the Orchestra section on the aisle. Several times during the show Roger made contact with my daughter, including waving and smiling at her.
The highlight of the show was
during Comfortably Numb, he pointed to her when he sang the line, "When I was a
child, I had a fleeting glimpse." He is a class act in concert and gave us
memories to last a lifetime. Bring The Boys Back Home! Thank you Roger.
The main reason to see this show was to take my friend there to experience the Roger Waters tour, since she's been a long time Pink Floyd fan (for a longer time than I have been), and because when Waters toured Mexico he only played at the major cities, so there was zero chance to see him at our hometown of Mexicali. Thus, the Irvine concert was the better chance for us to watch this world class tour. Given the circumstances, the 3.5 hour drive was not an obstacle because the reward was worth this road trip.
Everyone has said a lot of good stuff about Waters work on this tour already, so I would be just repeating everything again. However, I want to say that the audience was very participative throughout the show. It must be that open minded attitude of the Californian, spiced up with all of us who drove from south of the border. Maybe that is what helped to have a great time as a whole, not complaining about Roger political views (sometimes cheering in songs like Leaving Beirut and Sheep), but overall celebrating the music that makes Roger Waters a great artist for the ages.
The concert was nonstop excitement for everyone in the audience: In the Flesh, Mother, Set the Controls for the Heart of The Sun, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Have a Cigar and Wish You Were Here (played as if they belonged to the same album) made a powerful opening sequence. As a matter of fact, Roger Waters did not stop to talk with the audience until Leaving Beirut, the next to last song of the first set. Obviously Sheep was among the performances most applauded, and ended the first half of the show on a very high note. Almost as high as the flying pig after it had been released at the end of that song.
The Dark Side of the Moon was very well performed, with Time being the most popular song as well as Brain Damage/Eclipse. After Roger introduced the band, from the encore through the end, everyone was standing despite the cool breeze that blew over all of us in the lawn area. Needless to say, Another brick in the Wall and Comfortably Numb were greatly applauded and appropriately ended another great concert in Southern California.
I confess that I would have liked to hear a different set list, but the concert
is still powerful enough to keep you absorbed in whatever the band is playing. I
tend to think that the band had to overcome the inevitable comparison with the
former Pink Floyd. I used to believe that Dave Kilminster and Snowy White had to
deal with Dave Gilmours shadow, although I believe that they play great and put
their own signature to those classic songs. Then I liked what my friend said
after the concert: that this was another band and they did their job very well,
so it is useless to compare them to the originals. Maybe I should step away
thinking about history and accept what we have right now: Roger Waters is
offering a truly great show for the old school fans and even for those new ones
that weren't even born when he recorded his last album with Pink Floyd. Just
because of that, Muchas Gracias Roger! Come back soon, and if there's another
tour, please visit Baja California too!
