The crowd was very loud and Roger seemed to be enjoying
himself as well. He made a remark about England losing in cricket and how good it was to come down
under to play despite the distance.
An amazing show, lookin foward to night 2.
After a slightly delayed start. The concert kicked off. Same set list as other shows. As I was sitting
off to the side just behind the front of the stage. 8 rows back the sound was a little muddy, but the
band looked like they were having a good time.
The only thing is, that he did a new song about when he was young and in Lebinon .Not sure on the name and how to get a copy.
Cheers from down under Peter
The atmosphere was fantastic - the crowd was really enjoying it.
Even after all these years, Roger can still wow them - his voice is still very strong and he was superbly backed up by the band.
It was wonderful to see the range of ages - I saw young kids with their parents, as well as people in their seventies. It goes to show that Rogers music still"works" today just as it did 30 years on.
There is aanother good review in the Melbourne newspaper The Age (theage.com.au) but it isn't posted online (yet)
It seems that mostreviewers think "Leaving Beruit" is not up to par - I guess they are entitled to their opinion. I thought Roger sang it quite well - it clearlycomes from the heart and means a lot to him.
Cheers, etc.
What impressed me most was how humble and appreciative Roger seemed to be, standing there, playing for his fans. Also, I really liked how his anti-war stance came through but it wasn't rammed down our throats - it was done more through the background images on the screen, the writing on the flying pig etc.And we were left to make up our own minds as to how we should sit on the issue - he's treating his fans as intelligent peopleand I liked that.
One of the highlights - surprisingly - for me was the more recent song, Leaving Beirut... I had tears streaming down my face. A great track, with a great visual to go along withthe song and it more than held its placewith the more classic material.
The only downside was a few missed notes by the 2 lead guitarists, but I don't think anyone minded - I certainly didn't as Roger's presence more than madeup for it.
He's playing again tonight - wish I could afford to go again (but I'm also seeingEric Clapton tomorrow night ... 3 concerts in a row might be a bit much for my ears!).
Thanks for taking reviews!
Kind regards
Michelle Brown
Melbourne, Australia
The first set comprised numbers from both Floyd and his own with a new number thrown in... a song about a poverty struck family who looked after him at 17 while traveling in Beirut, offering him kindness, food and shelter and Rogers expressions of gratitude toward them. The highlight of this set, while not one of my favorite Floyd songs was Have a Cigar, solid rhythm with extraordinarily metallic vocals which made the song so much better than the original.
The second set was Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety and replicated so closely to the original album. Without doubt the vocals on Gig in the Sky was the highlight bringing a standing ovation and a sense of awe to all there.
The band finished with the end of the Moon coming back for an encore including Vera, Another Brick In the Wall part 2, and Comfortably Numb.
The political messages were there as well with 'Free David Hicks' written across the pig. David Hicks is an Australian held for the past five years without charge by the USA in Guantanamo prison. Australians are now uniting in their call to charge him or free him and a sentiment shared by me.
Of all the Floyd, Waters concerts I've seen, these shows were up there as one of the best, just not
quite beating Floyds Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour in 1988 for theatrics you gotta love those
lasers...
