"....GOD GETS!!"

A Video Review by Daniel Harrington

The "What God Wants Pt. 1" video Ep:

-"What God Wants Pt. 1" art music video -
- Roger Waters interview by Jim Ladd -
-"What God Wants Pt. 1" performance music video -

The video for "What God Wants Pt. 1", having premiered on MTV on August 17th, 1992, was released on home video at the beginning of September, containing the original video, plus a short interview with Rog conducted by Jim Ladd, then a band performance video to wrap things up.

The fantastic "What God Wants Pt. 1" video clip starts things off, and I must admit it is quite different than what I imagined the video would be like when I first heard the song. It's a colorful montage of barnyard animals, computer and clay animation, and monkeys playing with televisions in cages, starring the nearly extinct, only living white gorilla left in the world, currently a resident of the Barcelona zoo. Very enjoyable to watch, this is as good as any video Rog has ever made, even the Pros and Cons clips. Unfortunately, MTV only played this a few times, but I expected that's because Rog is not a name brand like some of our wonderful and meaningful teenybopper dance music groups of today. For todays music groups, all you need, is not love, it's a good publicity department, good lawyers, and a working drum machine. Oh well. :-(

The interview is sandwiched in between the two video clips, and is great! Finally , a professionally produced Rog interview for us to watch. Strangely, the first thing I noticed about this is how gray Roger's hair is getting, - maybe it's just the lighting. Our old friend Jim Ladd does the interviewing here, which takes place in some weird studio room - someone talk to the decorator. the interview can be divided into two sections: (1) Rogers distaste for using God to justify war, and (2) His distaste for music video channels. Very amusing, but I don't want to give away too many details. You'll just have to go out and get a copy for yourself!

Finally, is the performance video. Small bits of this appear in the original video, giving you a taste of what's to come. The band here isn't the same one from the Radio K.A.O.S. videos; no Andy Fairweather-Low, but Graham Broad and the ever pleasing Doreen Chantner do appear, and of course Jeff Beck is present. This takes place in a recording studio, with all kinds of breakables sitting around, which all manage to fall off the tables they're sitting on by the end of the video - even the cat doesn't escape. The close-ups of Ms. Chanter and second backup vocalist Tessa Niles are plentiful - I've got no problem with that. :-)

All in all, a great value for the $10.00 I spent on it - now go out and get a copy and support our man Rog!
